Gun Free Zones
Schools should not be gun free zones.
YESTERDAY'S NEWS
I don't necessarily think that gun-free zones shouldn't exist. Concerts, courtrooms, sporting events, and others should all have reasonable restrictions on entry with firearms, however in each of these three examples, the gun-free zone is accompanied by a strong presence of law enforcement or armed security. None of these gun-free zones are completely gun-free, however, with our schools, there are often only one or two armed officers covering an entire campus, at best. Teachers should not be expected or demanded to carry, but they should be entitled to conceal carry, as members of our society already trusted with the safety of the children, they are perfect candidates for fighting on behalf of the children. Some people have proposed increasing the presence of law-enforcement on campus, but I endorse a middle-ground solution: hire veterans who are tasked with solely the duty of protecting the school, with zero law-enforcement duties. Ideally, these veterans could serve as role-models to students, and while keeping schools safe ,also have a positive impact on their student bodies, developing levels of trust unavailable with law-enforcement officers. Certainly, they will be expected to report criminal activity, but any criminal act short of threatening the safety and lives of other students would not be within their job duties any more than it would be a substitute teacher, as they would not be employees of the state.
